In a desolate landscape, Karrer has lived for years cut off from the rest of the world, passing his time staring at coal carts disappearing into the distance beneath an endless rain. His only social links are the Titanik, a bar where he spends every night, and its owner, Willarsky. Attracted to a married woman who sings there, he becomes consumed by desire, setting in motion a chain of events marked by obsession, betrayal and despair.
