After a cavalry group is attacked, U.S. soldier Honus Gant and Cresta, a white woman who had lived among the Cheyenne, are left as the only survivors. As they attempt to reach the nearest army outpost, Honus begins to develop feelings for Cresta, while struggling with her sympathy for Indigenous people and her distrust of the U.S. government.
