Nina, a young woman from the country, arrives in Rome to work as a hotel maid. There she meets Contessa Sanziani, an elderly woman living in reduced circumstances whose past was filled with celebrated admirers, artists and aristocratic society.

As the two become friends, the Contessaā€™s stories offer Nina a world far removed from the shabby hotel. Encouraged to imagine a different life for herself, the young maid begins to picture herself inside those memories of beauty and romance. Liza Minnelli and Ingrid Bergman play Nina and the Contessa, with Charles Boyer co-starring in Vincente Minnelliā€™s romantic fantasy.
