Larry Cohen’s early crime films helped establish his reputation as an independent filmmaker. These two American International Pictures productions follow Fred Williamson as Tommy Gibbs, a Harlem gangster whose rise brings him into conflict with organised crime and corrupt officials.
In Black Caesar, Gibbs carries the scars of a violent childhood encounter with a police officer. Now leading his own Harlem syndicate, he sets out to expand his empire by challenging the Italian mafia and the NYPD.
Hell Up in Harlem continues Gibbs’s story as he tries to drive drug dealers from his neighbourhood while fighting a corrupt district attorney determined to protect their business.
Both 1973 films are presented together in their UK Blu-ray debut from Eureka Classics, with new and archival material exploring Cohen’s work and the blaxploitation genre.
