Part existential puzzle, part deadpan comedy, and part philosophical nightmare, the film stands as one of the defining works of late Soviet cinema.

Engineer Varakin arrives in a remote provincial city on routine business, only to find himself trapped in a place where nothing makes logical sense, yet everyone behaves as if it does. Drawn into the investigation of the apparent suicide—or possible murder—of a restaurant chef who may or may not be his long-lost father, Varakin’s desperate attempts to return to Moscow are endlessly thwarted by bureaucracy, ritual, and surreal custom. As the mystery deepens, the city reveals itself as a frozen museum of ideology, history, and madness.

Filled with bizarre non sequiturs, eerie symbolism, and melancholy humour, Zerograd unfolds like a Soviet answer to Brazil filtered through Agatha Christie and Monty Python. Anchored by Leonid Filatov’s quietly tragic performance and underscored by an evocative score from Eduard Artemyev, the film is both hilarious and haunting. This Deaf Crocodile release presents the globally definitive version, newly restored and accompanied by insightful supplements.

directed by: Karen Shakhnazarov
starring: Leonid Filatov, Armen Dzhigarkhanyan, Oleg Basilashvili
1988 / 102 min / 1.37:1 / Russian

Language: Russian

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0747/8096/6982/files/file_fada1240-27e5-4a94-ba38-038cd56027fc.jpg?v=1791340567
