Lily Mars is determined to escape small-town obscurity and make a name for herself on the stage. Her persistence leads her to producer John Thornway and a place as an understudy, but winning a professional opportunity is only the beginning of her problems. As their feelings become personal, he is reluctant to give her a leading role that might look like favouritism.

Judy Garland and Van Heflin star in this backstage musical about ambition, romance and the work behind a theatrical dream. Along the way, Lily finds encouragement from a theatre cleaning woman who once knew the spotlight herself.
