Thomas, a drifting young man, arrives in Munich and reconnects with his ex-girlfriend Peggy, who lives in a loose, commune-like flat defined by free love, revolutionary ideals, and a chilling secret. The women of the household share a ritual: the men in their lives are allowed only five days before being killed. As Thomas settles in, desire and danger blur, and the question becomes whether he will recognize the threat before time runs out.

Directed by Rudolf Thome, Red Sun captures the volatile energy of late-1960s West Germany with cool detachment and pop-inflected menace. Starring counterculture icon Uschi Obermaier alongside Marquard Bohm, the film sits at the crossroads of political disillusionment and genre subversion, functioning as both social critique and minimalist thriller. Its stark style and unsettling premise have earned it cult status and a prominent place in discussions of radical European cinema.

This standard edition Blu-ray marks the film’s first U.S. release, featuring a director-approved high-definition transfer and a thoughtful slate of contextual extras that explore the cultural and political forces surrounding the film and the New German Cinema movement as a whole.

directed by: Rudolf Thome
starring: Marquard Bohm, Uschi Obermaier, Sylvia Kekulé
1970 / 86 min / German

Number of discs: 1
Audio: German stereo

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0747/8096/6982/files/file_f99e7dd5-a759-4152-852c-bb1a2974e896.jpg?v=1791342508
