Set in early 19th-century rural Ireland, the film unfolds like an ancient ballad captured on celluloid, steeped in superstition, myth, and elemental dread.

Mary Ryan delivers a spellbinding performance as Maura, an intense and isolated young woman accused of witchcraft after being seen in the woods with the enigmatic conjurer and fiddle player Scarf Michael, portrayed with near-mythic presence by Mick Lally. As fear spreads through her tight-knit community — including her own family — Maura begins to experience unsettling visions that suggest a latent power she herself does not fully understand.

Blending folklore, pagan ritual, religious paranoia, and ghostly suggestion, The Outcasts evokes a world of mud, peat, cold stone, and whispered superstition. Hooded musicians, straw masks, and ritualized fear permeate the landscape, while Wynne-Simmons’ direction maintains an eerie, lyrical restraint that makes the horror feel both ancient and inevitable.

Co-starring Cyril Cusack and featuring a superb traditional folk score by Steve Cooney, the film has been lovingly restored by the Irish Film Institute and released for the first time in the United States by Deaf Crocodile. A major rediscovery for fans of atmospheric, folklore-driven horror, The Outcasts stands alongside the finest examples of the genre.

directed by: Robert Wynne-Simmons
starring: Mary Ryan, Mick Lally, Cyril Cusack
1982 / 95 min / English

Language: English

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0747/8096/6982/files/file_d9e25b49-e14d-4130-9897-5b7d700b65c1.jpg?v=1791342628
