Thong Girls [Blu-ray]

Thong Girls Blu-ray receives its long-overdue worldwide disc premiere, presenting one of Jess Franco’s most unexpectedly playful and heartfelt late-period works in a new 2K scan from the original camera negative. Set during the final days of summer in the sun-drenched resort city of Benidorm, the film captures a chaotic crossroads of seductive foreigners, scheming hustlers, gullible tourists and fading celebrities, all orbiting around a seaside nightlife fueled by desire, deception and lust.

Part sunny sex comedy and part sharp-edged social satire, Thong Girls channels the spirit of a European NASHVILLE filtered through Franco’s unmistakable erotic sensibility. Lina Romay, Franco’s longtime muse and collaborator, delivers one of her most radiant performances, while Antonio Mayans anchors the film with relaxed charm and mischief. Together with a familiar ensemble of Franco regulars, the film becomes a breezy, sexually charged snapshot of excess, fantasy and melancholy lurking beneath postcard-perfect holiday glamour.

Often overlooked within Franco’s vast filmography, Thong Girls stands apart as a warm, funny and surprisingly reflective entry, balancing playful eroticism with an affectionate eye toward the absurdities of desire and performance.
