During the Napoleonic Wars, Captain Horatio Hornblower takes HMS Lydia to Central America to deliver weapons to a local ruler fighting Spain. A change in Britain's alliances transforms that mission: the man he has supplied becomes an enemy, and Hornblower must face both a fortified shore and a powerful captured warship.
Gregory Peck plays C. S. Forester's naval officer, whose resourcefulness is tested by shifting loyalties, battles at sea and the demands of command. Virginia Mayo co-stars as the noblewoman whose rescue brings an unexpected romantic complication into his life. Raoul Walsh directs the adventure.
