Change of Sex [Blu-ray]

Change of Sex Blu-ray presents Vicente Aranda’s 1977 Spanish drama in a new 2K restoration from the original negative, available on Blu-ray in North America for the first time.

María José is a teenage trans girl growing up during the final years of Francoist Spain, where her identity is rejected by both her father and the conservative society surrounding her. Sent away from her provincial home to Barcelona, she discovers an alternative community among the city’s cabarets, performers and outsiders.

As María José begins to live more openly as herself, she must navigate family conflict, relationships and the social pressures of a country undergoing enormous cultural change. Starring Victoria Abril and Bibiana Fernández, Change of Sex is an early work exploring trans identity during Spain’s transition out of dictatorship, photographed by cinematographer Néstor Almendros.
