Dead Mountaineer's Hotel [4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray]

Dead Mountaineer's Hotel 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray presents Grigori Kromanov’s delirious genre hybrid in a new 4K restoration from Deaf Crocodile, created in collaboration with the Estonian Film Institute and Film Archive. Based on the novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, this 1979 cult classic collides locked-room mystery, Euro giallo style, noir paranoia, and unexpected alien sci-fi into one dazzling fever dream.

Police inspector Peter Glebsky arrives at a remote mountain lodge named The Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel, only to find himself trapped by avalanche alongside an increasingly suspicious group of guests. Among them: a tubercular gangster, an eccentric physicist, a cryptic hotel owner, and a mysterious beauty—plus a loyal St. Bernard. As tensions rise and identities fracture, the film spirals into hall-of-mirrors intrigue against a gleaming chrome-and-marble interior that feels lifted from a 1970s Italian thriller.

With striking art direction by Tõnu Virve and Priit Vaher, atmospheric cinematography by Jüri Sillart, and a hypnotic electronic score by Sven Grünberg, Dead Mountaineer’s Hotel stands as one of the most visually distinctive genre films of the Soviet era.
