Demon Pond [4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray]

Demon Pond 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray presents Masahiro Shinoda’s ravishing 1979 folk-horror fantasia in a director-supervised UHD edition. Adapting a classic Kabuki ghost story, Shinoda fuses theatrical tradition with avant-garde Japanese New Wave aesthetics, crafting a dreamlike parable where myth and human desire collide. When a wandering traveler arrives in an isolated, drought-ravaged village, he becomes entangled in an ancient curse bound to a mystical pond whose resident spirits control the fate of the land and its people. Starring Tsutomu Yamazaki, Go Kato, and legendary onnagata performer Tamasaburo Bando—who also embodies the pond’s supernatural princess—Demon Pond unfolds as a visually hypnotic meditation on love, ritual, and nature’s unforgiving power. Featuring a mesmerizing electronic score by Isao Tomita and restored in 4K under the supervision of Shinoda and Bando, this edition reveals the film’s bold colours, painterly compositions, and otherworldly atmosphere with stunning clarity.
