Frankenstein: Legend of Terror Limited Slipcover Edition Blu-ray presents Yugo Serikawa’s 1981 Japanese animated adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in a new restoration from the original 35mm camera negative based on a 5K scan by Toei Animation.

Dr. Frankenstein’s experiments give life to a hulking creature known simply as Franken, setting in motion a series of increasingly tragic events. Pursued through a Gothic landscape of laboratories, graveyards and supernatural violence, the creature gradually emerges as a lonely and tormented figure struggling to understand his own existence.

Produced by Toei Animation, Frankenstein: Legend of Terror brings a distinctly Japanese animated approach to Shelley’s classic story while drawing on the melancholy and visual traditions of earlier Frankenstein films. Deaf Crocodile’s restoration includes new subtitles, commentary, a visual essay and an extensive roundtable exploring Frankenstein adaptations across film and comics.
