In a Hokkaido fishing village in 1947, Tetsu returns from the war to join his father Kyubei's herring business. The homecoming coincides with the arrival of Jakoman, a one-eyed stranger whose grudge against Kyubei threatens the family and the seasonal fishermen around them.

Ken Takakura and Tetsuro Tanba star in this early Kinji Fukasaku action drama, adapted from a screenplay by Akira Kurosawa and set against the snowy landscape of northern Japan.
