After their marriages end, longtime friends Kate McArdle and Allie Lowell decide to share a New York City home and raise their children together. Kate's spontaneous approach to life frequently collides with Allie's more cautious habits, making everyday decisions a lively negotiation. Between parenting, work and dating, each woman discovers how much independence can depend on having someone trustworthy nearby. Their household changes as the children grow and new opportunities arrive, but friendship remains its foundation. Across six seasons, this comedy explores a family built through choice, with affection and friction shaping the lives of two women starting over together.
