Le Joli Mai (The Lovely Month of May) Blu-ray presents Chris Marker and Pierre Lhomme’s expansive documentary portrait of Paris and its people during May 1962.

Filmed shortly after the ceasefire in the Algerian War, the documentary captures Paris at a moment of social and political transition through conversations with an extraordinary cross-section of its residents. Workers, students, families, businesspeople, immigrants and others discuss their daily lives, relationships, ambitions and concerns while the filmmakers observe the city around them.

Divided into two parts, A Prayer from the Eiffel Tower focuses largely on personal experiences and attitudes, while The Return of Fantomas turns toward the broader political and social realities shaping contemporary France. Together, their encounters create a detailed portrait of individuals attempting to understand their lives and their place within a changing society.
