Nick Cochran, a war veteran fleeing an unjust accusation, arrives in Macao alongside lounge singer Julie Benson and a salesman with an undisclosed purpose. Julie has already stolen Nick's wallet, but their uneasy acquaintance soon becomes entangled with the activities of casino owner Vincent Halloran.
Halloran's gambling business conceals a diamond-smuggling operation. When he employs Julie as a singer and takes a personal interest in her, jealousy and suspicion spread through the nightclub. Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell lead a cast including William Bendix and Gloria Grahame in a crime romance where concealed motives make every alliance uncertain.
