New York physician Joel Fleischman expects a conventional medical career, but the scholarship that paid for his education sends him to Cicely, a remote Alaskan town. He plans to endure his obligation and leave, only to become entangled in a community whose residents rarely see the world the way he does. Bush pilot Maggie O'Connell challenges his assumptions, while radio host Chris Stevens, former astronaut Maurice Minnifield and the regulars at the Brick offer their own unexpected perspectives. Across six seasons, everyday disputes mingle with romance, folklore and flights of imagination as a reluctant outsider discovers the complicated rewards of belonging.
