Ombres de soie [Blu-ray]

Ombres de soie Blu-ray presents Mary Stephen’s 1978 film about the relationship between two Chinese women in 1935 Shanghai, newly restored in 2K from a 16mm print held by Library and Archives Canada.

Filmed on a limited budget with 1970s Paris standing in for 1930s Shanghai, Ombres de soie offers an intimate perspective on identity, place and relationships. Stephen conceived the film in dialogue with Marguerite Duras’ India Song, approaching similar terrain from the perspective of an Asian woman.

The restoration was completed at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna and is accompanied by three newly restored short films by Stephen, offering a broader look at her early filmmaking.
