Robert Ryan plays Jim Wilson, a New York detective whose encounters with violent criminals have left him consumed by anger. His own brutality threatens to destroy him. A murder investigation takes him out of the city and into the countryside, where he meets Mary Malden, a blind woman played by Ida Lupino. Her compassion offers a possibility of change that his work on the streets no longer seems to allow.
Nicholas Ray directs this manhunt drama, with a score by Bernard Herrmann. As Wilson pursues the case, the film follows his struggle with self-hatred and the chance of recovering a sense of humanity through Mary.
