Jeff Bailey has built a quiet life running a gas station in a small California town, but a visitor brings news that the past he left behind has caught up with him. Once a private detective, Jeff was hired by gambler Whit Sterling to find Kathie Moffat, the woman who shot him and disappeared with his money. Jeff's own involvement with Kathie now draws him back into a web of deception and blackmail. Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer and Kirk Douglas star in Jacques Tourneur's noir.
