During the Depression, a womanizing sheet-music salesman (Steve Martin) pursues an affair with a schoolteacher (Bernadette Peters) while his wife (Jessica Harper) is left behind. This musical contrasts troubled lives with the promise of popular songs, using lip-synced performances of recordings associated with Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire and other stars of the era. Herbert Ross directs from a screenplay by Dennis Potter.
