A shell-shocked veteran of the First World War has lost all memory of his former life. After leaving an asylum, he meets Paula, a music-hall performer who gives him affection, a home and a new identity as Smithy. Their marriage offers the future he could not imagine while recovering from the war.

Then an accident restores his earlier memories as Charles Rainier, heir to a prosperous family, while erasing his life with Paula. Unable to make him remember their marriage, she finds another way to remain near him. Ronald Colman and Greer Garson star in Mervyn LeRoy's romance about love divided by two separate pasts.
