During a sweltering New York summer, a tenement building becomes the centre of its residents’ quarrels, gossip and frustrated hopes. Anna Maurrant, her daughter Rose and their neighbour Sam Kaplan struggle to imagine different lives while remaining caught in the pressures of their close-knit community.
King Vidor adapts Elmer Rice’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, with Rice also writing the screenplay. Sylvia Sidney, Estelle Taylor and William Collier Jr. lead the cast, while Beulah Bondi brings her stage role as the watchful Mrs. Jones to the screen. The drama unfolds around the building, sidewalk and street, accompanied by Alfred Newman’s score.
