The Sympathy for the Underdog Blu-ray brings Kinji Fukasaku’s essential pre-breakthrough yakuza film back into focus, following ex-gang boss Gunji as he emerges from a decade in prison to find his territory overtaken by a corporate-backed syndicate. Refusing to fade into irrelevance, he reunites his old crew and sets his sights on Okinawa — a volatile, loosely governed frontier where rival factions and shifting power structures make every move a gamble. Shot on location and loaded with the gritty energy that would define Fukasaku’s later classics, the film stands as a crucial stepping stone in the evolution of modern yakuza cinema.
