The Beast to Die Blu-ray presents a bleak, corrosive descent into postwar alienation and criminal obsession, marking one of the most unsettling performances of Yusaku Matsuda’s career. Directed by Toru Murakawa from a venomous screenplay by Shoichi Maruyama, this 1980 thriller strips away Matsuda’s familiar action-hero image and replaces it with something far more disturbing and nihilistic.

Haunted by atrocities witnessed on battlefields across Asia, war photographer Kunihiko Date (Matsuda) returns to Tokyo emotionally hollow and violently detached. What begins as a series of calculated robberies and murders soon escalates toward an audacious bank heist, driven less by profit than by a need to obliterate himself and the society he despises. In his search for an accomplice, Date finds the volatile and equally disaffected Tetsuo (Takeshi Kaga), forging a partnership rooted in rage, paranoia, and mutual self-destruction.

Cold, methodical, and deeply pessimistic, The Beast to Die stands alongside films like Taxi Driver and Miami Blues in its portrait of masculine collapse and moral rot. Newly restored in 4K by Kadokawa and released in a limited edition presentation, this Blu-ray offers a definitive home video edition of one of Japan’s most uncompromising crime films.
