In a small Italian town, Hilary Cummins works as secretary to Francis Ingram, a pianist who uses a wheelchair. Spending his time among the books in Ingramās extensive library, Cummins immerses himself in supernatural subjects and increasingly frightening imaginings. After the pianist dies, killings at the villa appear to be the work of a hand severed from his corpse.
Peter Lorre plays Cummins and Victor Francen plays Ingram, alongside Robert Alda and Andrea King. Robert Florey directs Curt Siodmakās screenplay, which sets apparently supernatural events against the secretaryās troubled perceptions.
