The House of 72 Tenants [Blu-ray]

The House of 72 Tenants Blu-ray presents Chor Yuen’s landmark 1973 Hong Kong comedy from Shaw Brothers Studio. Set inside a crowded tenement building, the film follows a colourful group of renters who band together against an abusive landlady during a dispute over water.

Tasked with remaking a 1963 film adapted from a Shanghainese play, Chor Yuen insisted on staging his version in Cantonese, helping reconnect with local audiences and reshape the Hong Kong film market. The result became the highest-grossing Hong Kong film of 1973, even outpacing Enter the Dragon.

Remembered for its ensemble cast, lively set-bound staging, star cameos and influence on later Hong Kong comedy, The House of 72 Tenants remains a key Shaw Brothers title and an important moment in the revival of Cantonese-language cinema. This Kani Blu-ray edition includes archival interviews, new appreciation, selected scenes commentary, new writing and a limited edition slipcover.
