Russell Crowe plays Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican's chief exorcist, in a supernatural thriller inspired by the priest's writings. In July 1987, the Pope sends Amorth to investigate a possessed boy at San Sebastian Abbey. The child knows disturbing details of Amorth's own past that he could not possibly have learned, convincing the priest that this is no ordinary illness.
Working with the younger Father Tomas, Amorth searches the abbey's history for answers. Their investigation leads to records of the Inquisition and a hidden evil beneath the building, drawing them into a centuries-old conspiracy with consequences for the Vatican itself.
