Twenty years of boxing have not extinguished Stoker Thompson’s belief that success is still possible. His next bout is scheduled after the main event on a Wednesday night in Paradise City. He prepares to fight without knowing that his manager has arranged for him to lose.
Robert Ryan stars as Stoker, with Audrey Totter as the wife who stands by him. Director Robert Wise follows their evening in real time, placing the couple’s struggle for dignity amid a boxing world of shabby arenas, spectators hungry for violence and fighters clinging to unlikely hopes. This Warner Archive Blu-ray uses the 2019 high-definition master.
