The Shape of Night Blu-ray brings Noburo Nakamura’s haunting melodrama to high-definition, following a young rural woman whose infatuation with a charming hoodlum pulls her into Tokyo’s neon underworld. Pushed into prostitution and passed from one exploiter to the next, she becomes lost in the city’s seductive but suffocating nightlife. Shot with lush, saturated colours and a lyrical sensibility, the film bridges classic Shochiku drama with emerging New Wave influences, evoking the emotional sweep of Douglas Sirk and foreshadowing the atmospheric style later embraced by Wong Kar-wai.
