Three sisters in a Montana town look toward very different futures as romance enters their lives. Louise, the eldest, falls for sportswriter Frank Medlin and elopes with him to San Francisco. But the promise of a new life gives way to the pressures of his drinking, frustrated ambitions and resentment when she takes a job.
Frank eventually leaves for Singapore, abandoning Louise shortly before the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Bette Davis and Errol Flynn star in the story of her troubled marriage, set alongside the choices made by her two sisters as each searches for security and happiness.
