Accused of setting fire to a local mill, Leopold Dilg escapes from jail and takes refuge in the home of his old friend Nora Shelley. Her plans to hide him become complicated when distinguished law professor Michael Lightcap arrives early to rent the house for the summer. Passing Leopold off as a gardener keeps the immediate danger at bay, but arguments over justice, mistaken identities and a growing romantic rivalry soon make secrecy impossible. Cary Grant, Jean Arthur and Ronald Colman lead George Stevens's blend of screwball comedy and social drama as the unlikely housemates try to expose corruption and save an innocent man from a town ready to condemn him.
