The Ugly (Limited Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray]

The Ugly Blu-ray presents one of the most unsettling and stylish psychological horror films of the late 1990s, restored at last for North American audiences. Confined to a mental institution, disturbed young serial killer Simon is tormented by sadistic orderlies and an inner voice he calls “The Ugly,” a manifestation that drives him toward violence. When psychiatrist Dr. Karen Schumaker agrees to evaluate whether Simon is fit for release, she descends into a fractured mind where trauma, repression, and brutality are inseparable — and where the truth threatens to consume everyone involved.

A harrowing blend of psychological horror and character study, The Ugly stands out for its visual confidence and emotional weight. Featuring striking early makeup effects work by the future Oscar-winning Wētā Workshop team, the film marked a powerful debut for director Scott Reynolds and has since earned cult status for its unflinching intensity. This Limited Collector’s Edition brings the film back in a newly scanned presentation, accompanied by extensive new supplements that explore its legacy, themes, and production history.
